The Portable XRF Course provides users of portable XRF devices with basic radiation protection and radiation safety knowledge. This will allow participants to apply these principles in accordance with manufacturer's instructions in the safe use of pXRF devices.
This course starts with the basics of radiation: what it is, its sources, types and properties (of x-rays), how it affects the body, and how we measure radiation exposure and personal doses.
Then, we'll focus on how we can keep radiation doses within limits and as low as reasonably achievable. Fundamental knowledge of the radiation protection strategies of time, distance, and shielding as applied to pXRF device use will provide the knowledge that allows you to keep your radiation doses within the dose limits.
Finally we focus specifically on the pXRF device: recognising its components, safety features, optional accessories and how they are applied in the safe use of the device in routine and emergency situations.
Evident confirms that "the Radiation Training course 'Safe Use of Portable XRF Devices' is based on the Vanta series user manual and would meet our requirements for training when coupled with the use of the Competency Checklist".
This course certificate, coupled with the competency checklist (downloaded via your student portal), will satisfy requirements for a radiation use licence in Tasmania for pXRF.
There is continuous assessment throughout the course. Within a module are quizzes to check content is understood prior to moving on to the next topic. The pass mark of quizzes is 70%.
While you work through quizzes you are remotely proctored using your webcam under normal test conditions.
